Review: touch tank by quinnie

By Julia Tomlinson and C. Fhoum

Bedroom-pop artist quinnie released her highly anticipated latest song ‘“touch tank” after the teaser audio for its release quickly gained well-deserved traction on TikTok. Upon its release, “touch tank” to date has amassed well over 3.4 million streams on Spotify and counting. She also created an incredible music video paired with hand-drawn album artwork to go along with the song’s launch.

“touch tank” is a reflection of her relationship dynamic with her boyfriend, highlighting his tender touch and gentleness he uses with her. The softness of her vocals and the instrumental echoes the delicateness of the healthy love they share with each other being depicted in their relationship.

In the self-directed music video for "touch tank," quinnie simultaneously plays the trainer and the sea creature on display. Singing of oceanic euphemisms for sex, she both watches and is subjected to the attendees all lining up, barely dipping two fingers into the water to touch her--a common aquarium guideline turned erotic. And when one particular lucky fellow scoops her out of the pool and dashes off, we find the two of them enjoying a private moment where all he does is cherish her.

Realizing she no longer wants to hide herself, quinnie dives into the ocean of another, asks if the two of them can wake to each other in the morning, lets herself be carried away to places unknown.

It's this fleeting intimacy between two people that quinnie wants us to focus on. She cancels a "hot hipster threesome," a different path from the free-spirited love she is used to giving and receiving--instead exploring a love of the mundane, of the overly familiar. Realizing she no longer wants to hide herself, quinnie dives into the ocean of another, asks if the two of them can wake to each other in the morning, lets herself be carried away to places unknown.

quinnie’s music (streamable on soundcloud and bandcamp) usually takes after the folky, lonely, ethereal sound of being an indie singer-songwriter–with this new track, she ventures into more enthusiastic territory, incorporating elements of upbeat bedroom pop and using the genre’s knack for simple chord progressions to present a delightfully fresh summer bop.
