Review: Change My Mind by Anna Shoemaker
By Julia Tomlinson
Anna Shoemaker is a crucial up-and-coming singer-songwriter to know in the indie-pop scene. She has released two EPs titled “East Side” (2018) and “Everything Is Embarrassing” (2020). The Brooklyn native has been on a roll these past few years and has already released various songs from her upcoming 2022 debut album titled "Sick!" and "It's Depression (ft. Middle Part). The newest addition to these album previews is “Change My Mind”, a bittersweet narrative about growing out of naivety and into emotional maturity despite deeply rooted anxieties and uncertainties about life.
Regarding the song Anna feels “It’s about being hopeful while also accepting and welcoming your emotions as they come. Writing this song really changed a lot for me.” Learning to understand and not fight back against your feelings is a complex part of growing up, especially when forgiving yourself for the past is a significant aspect of that.
For me personally, this song is the embodiment of growing pains. The lyrics “I might die a little bit inside / if I see you tonight / so don’t come by” mark a turning point for having to “rip off the bandaid” and adapt to changes and emotions as you come into your own.
Anna’s 2022 debut album release is right around the corner and in the meantime, go support her over on Soundcloud and Spotify and check out her socials below!
