Interview: Danielle Juhre
By Kristen Roberts
Singer-songwriter, Danielle Juhre, is a fresh voice on the music scene and she has blown us away with her new single “Nobody.” After touring for some time, Juhre has made it back to the studio just in time to bless us with this new tune. With her powerful voice, Juhre slides her way into the hearts (and playlists) of many.
It’s been a year since your last release. Does this feel like a resurgence for you and your music?
Most definitely. It’s great to be back with a new sound and I’m so fortunate for everyone who patiently waited for this new release and for more to come.
“Nobody” is pretty different from your first single “Does She Know?”. What inspired you to make that change?
I’ve never been an artist of predictability. I’ve been influenced by so many different eras of music and it’s hard to restrict myself to one specific sound. “Does She Know?” was a perfect example of who I am as an artist, but “Nobody” was the dance anthem that I’ve always wanted to write that brought me entirely out of my comfort zone.
What does your writing process look like?
My writing process differs song by song but I generally write the topline of the chorus first and build everything around the chorus. Collaboration is a large part of my writing as well and I love sharing ideas with other writers and musicians.
Do you prefer bouncing ideas off of people or writing alone?
I generally prefer writing alone and then adding in other collaborators once my ideas of the general outline of the song are finalized. It’s so important to me to place one hundred percent of myself into any song I’m writing and I look for collaborators of the same mentality. I absolutely love working with other writers and musicians, I think it’s one of the best parts about writing a song.
How do you promote yourself in such a hectic, overflowing industry?
It’s incredibly easy to become overwhelmed as an artist in this aspect but I take everything section by section and do what I can and then seek assistance through my management. Promoting myself through performances has been the most effective way for me personally and I’m fortunate enough to say that I have a great group of friends and family that help spread the word about my music as well.
How has Berklee influenced your career?
Going to Berklee influenced my career tremendously. I found my sound at Berklee, learned about myself as an artist at Berklee, and met the most incredible people and musicians. A majority of my entire team is comprised of Berklee alumni or current students and I cannot express enough how much they have positively influenced my life and helped me push my boundaries as a writer, musician, and artist.
Where do you find inspiration for your songs?
The inspiration behind my last two singles were entirely relationship based and a majority of my writing stems from love or lack thereof haha
You’ve said that you’re lucky to have found your sound so early in your career. Do you have any tips for other artists who may be struggling to find their sound?
My best advice is to write a handful of 10 to 15 songs and go back and try to notice the pattern in how they are written or their sound. I found my sound based on what I constantly kept coming back to writing. For me, an artists sound is what they naturally and organically write. It’s not something that’s forced but something that feels like home.
Has touring and interacting with fans influenced the kind of music you want to release?
I wouldn’t necessarily say that it’s influenced the music specifically but it has influenced my ambition to write. Seeing people in the audience singing along to original songs of mine and continually request new music and their response to my music has been overwhelmingly enlightening and I’m very grateful. Because of this, I am more ambitious to continue writing than ever.
Can we expect an EP or album from you in the near future?
I’m working with my team currently on an EP that will be released in early 2019. It’s heavily influenced by Amy Winehouse, Mark Ronson, and the Motown Era and I’m very excited to share it.
